Will's Top 10 Films of 2010

You know how it works. I list my Top 10, you read it, you comment below. Let's have a look at the runner-ups first.

...at may pahabol...

And my top 10 films of 2010 are...

A harrowing tale of family and moral perversion. Jennifer Lawrence takes control of the entire movie with her restrained yet convincing performance as Ree Dolly. We actually feel like we are part of her family and, in the end, part of her problems.

The Town continuously questions our perception on immorality and quickly throws a slap here and there the least we expect it. Director Ben Affleck nails it, while the forever awesome Jeremy Renner upstages him in every scene.

Condensing six-volumes worth of graphic novel into one movie is something a director would think twice about. Luckily, the folks responsible for this film are a bunch of wackos who intended to take us viewers into one hell of a ride through a pop culture mash-up of insanity. Cinemas showing this one should include seatbelts on their seats.

An unexpected treat from DreamWorks. This film wisely chose to focus more on the development of a partnership rather than individual characters. Irresistible. Toothless nibbles our cute-o-meter to the fullest. Get it? Nibbles? Toothless? Hahahaha!

An "edge of your seat" Australian film that tells the tale of a family of criminals. Jacki Weaver's portrayal shines, her subdued wickedness emanating all throughout. Not just some old lady you can mess with. Successfully creating a sense of foreboding from beginning to end, this film could be the Godfather for the modern times.

Forget about its so-called inaccuracy to what really happened. This isn't just some film about Facebook, but the film about a generation. The movie presents a script so intelligent and full of life that it could be released as a radio drama and still receive critical acclaim. And with impressive performances by Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, one could never go wrong in watching this.

I'm considering this 2009 French film in this list because of its worldwide release dates, so don't complain. An excruciating 150 minutes of prison drama. With unforgettable scenes from the razor murder to the deer corpse, it grabs our attention and never lets go until the climactic shoot-out at the end.

As the last film I watched in this list, Black Swan took a great leap from the bottom of my countdown. Combining a gripping storyline with a mood-settling score, this is the live-action film Satoshi Kon would've made if he is still alive. And Natalie Portman's performance on this one spells O-S-C-A-R.

Toy Story 3 may be the definitive film of a specific generation, but it doesn't mean the younger ones will not find something worth rejoicing herein. Talk about ending the series on a high note. And making a lot of boys lie that it was only their allergies acting up to explain the tears during the film's ending. To sum it up, the film's heart is as large as its ticket sales.

Call it overrated. Call it too literal. Boo you. Over the next few years, Inception will be the film we would all remember whenever 2010 is mentioned. Christopher Nolan deserves nonstop sex night after night for creating this. For a movie that did not fully rely on CGI, this is one visually-impressive treat for the eyes. Plus, the best experience happens not while  watching it, but after watching it.

* * * *

Great year. Great movies!

Every blog that somewhat focuses on films is expected to have such list, and you've just seen mine. I'm actually happy with this Top 10, with my only disappointment on the fact that I haven't listed Filipino films due to neglect. My promise for next year: Must. Watch. More. Filipino. Films.

How about you? What is your Top 10 for this year?

@J,

Hi! I am a friend of will, and I am a film blogger. I've been using film screen shots for errr... three years now. In the film blogging world, this is an acceptable thing to do. Even film theorists do so. i.e. David Bordwell (http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/)
Its part of the cinephile tradition of sharing pictures of films.

I used screenshots heavily when I'm doing a frame-by-frame analysis of the film:

Playtime (1967) - http://adrianmendizabal.blogspot.com/2010/10/live-blog-notes-on-play-time-1967_23.html

L'Avventura (1960) - http://adrianmendizabal.blogspot.com/2010/10/live-blog-notes-on-lavventura-1960.html

Millenium Mambo (2001) -

http://adrianmendizabal.blogspot.com/2010/10/live-blog-notes-on-millennium-mambo.html

Screenshots can help us, film critics, to analyze the film in detail especially when we're analyzing the aesthetics of the films. I am doing a series for this one.

However, when you used screenshot lets say you're gonna publish a film book, you need to pay for the copyright of the image. This is usually paid either to the filmmaker or producer of the film. It requires a lot of legal stuff and of course, a lot of money to used a single screenshot that is why FILM BOOKS are heavily priced. Colored screenshots are usually more expensive than black and white ones in terms of copyright and publishing.

I think I answered your question.
Anyway, merry christmas and a happy new year!

1. The Town - I was surprised at how good the film was and I must admit I was a bit skeptical about at first but yeah, Ben Affleck did an amazing job!

2. The Social Network - Jesse Eisenberg is the man! I wish it could get nominations from Oscars.

3. Black Swan - forget the fact that she's pregnant or engaged, this film just made my friend dream of becoming a ballerina. And yeah, I agree with you -- O-S-C-A-R.

4. Inception - simply love this film. There's no other words for it but --crazy!

Nice. Tama ka nga! 6 out of my Top 20 are in your list and pareho tayo ng Top 2. Nice!

I would've liked to include Black Swan sa list ko also, but I saw it right after my Top 20 was published. Sayang. Oh well. I'll make Black Swan my opening movie review salvo for 2011. And I don't care, but I'll make sure it's part of my 2011 Best Movies. Hahaha.

BTW, I'm intrigued with Ghost Writer and The Crazies. I heard good reviews about it. Hmmm

I agree with Inception being at the top of the list. This is one movie which roused discussion and theories after the movie was scene. This is also the only movie I've seen wherein viewers 'wow'ed' at the last scene. Most (including me) if not all we're gripped by the movie.

How sad is it that I have seen only two movies out of your entire list? Huhu.

Nielz said...

Hahahaha.. Grabe sobrang nakatira na yata ako sa cave.. lol.

Toys Story 3 lang napanuod ko sa list mo. Maybe I've been watching a lot of bad movies. Hindi kasi ako movie buff eh, I only watch pag may nagyaya, and I don't get to choose movies I watch.

More good movies for you will. :D

Awesome list. I watched only few movies this year. Boo me!

I haven't watched Scott Pilgrim yet -- I'm still waiting for that blu-ray dvd -- and I'm not torrent-downloading it. Trying to be a good fan here!
